Mosaic sign I designed and created with the adults at Turn City Center for the Arts, a day program for adults with disabilities. The logo of Turn Services contains the word “TURN” in all caps, with a solitary leaf in the middle. I thought that the leaf made an excellent metaphor for the individual nature of disability (every leaf is different), and the need to approach those needs on an individual basis. As such, I had the adults each design a leaf, which I scanned or photographed and added to the design along with the TURN lettering, based on the logo. We then reproduced the design on a two-by-three foot scale using various colors of mosaic tile. Pre-fabricated ceramic letters were used to complete the full name of the program.
